                       Mapping Terminology

What are Sectors?
-----------------

Sectors are simply regions of space which each comprise sixteen
subsectors. The subsectors are each designated a letter for easy
reference.

                 -------------------------
                 | | | | |
                 | A | B | C | D |
                 | | | | |
                 -------------------------
                 | | | | |
                 | E | F | G | H |
                 | | | | |
                 -------------------------
                 | | | | |
                 | I | J | K | L |
                 | | | | |
                 -------------------------
                 | | | | |
                 | M | N | O | P |
                 | | | | |
                 -------------------------

What are Subsectors?
--------------------

Subsectors are regions of space which each comprise eighty
parsecs. Parsecs are numbered for easy reference (for example,
subsector A would be numbered as follows):

     _____ _____ _____ _____
    / \ / \ / \ / \

What are Parsecs?
-----------------

Each parsec is a map hex with a mean diameter of about 3.26
lightyears. Each parsec can house a starsystem, and each
starsystem will have one world which is the main world of the
starsystem.

What about Directions?
----------------------

Instead of using the typical North, South, East, and West,
Traveller uses other terms:

North => Coreward (toward the galactic core)
South => Rimward (toward the galactic rim)
East => Trailing (away from the direction of galactic rotation)
West => Spinward (toward the direction of galactic rotation)

Important features at this point:
---------------------------------

  *  The universe is flat
  * All starsystems have worlds or at least asteroid belts.
  * All starsystems are at parsec intervals from one another.

As you can see, Traveller isn't exactly the end-all, be-all of
realistic, hard-science RPGs. Nonetheless, this sort of
simplicity contributed to its early acceptance.

That's about all the help you should need on mapping terminology
in order to use this program.
